🎭 1. Choosing Your Class

Path of Exile 2 has six base classes, each with two ascendancy specialisations (12 total as of 0.5). Your class determines your starting position on the passive tree and which ascendancy paths you can take.

⚔️ Warrior

Strength-based · Melee & tankiness

Ascendancies: Titan, Warbringer

Best for: Players who want to facetank everything. Heavy slam skills, shields, and armour stacking.

🏹 Ranger

Dexterity-based · Ranged & evasion

Ascendancies: Deadeye, Pathfinder

Best for: Bow builds, crossbow grenade combos, and high-mobility play. Deadeye is excellent for league start.

🔮 Sorceress

Intelligence-based · Elemental damage

Ascendancies: Stormweaver, Chronomancer

Best for: Screen-wide elemental damage. Stormweaver dominates lightning/cold, Chronomancer manipulates time for insane DPS windows.

💀 Witch

Intelligence-based · Minions & chaos

Ascendancies: Infernalist, Blood Mage

Best for: Summoner/necromancer builds. The #1 recommended class for absolute beginners — your minions do the work while you stay safe.

🥋 Monk

Dex/Str hybrid · Martial combat

Ascendancies: Invoker, Martial Artist (NEW in 0.5!)

Best for: Unique quarterstaff and unarmed combat. Martial Artist is the newest ascendancy — controls battlefield flow with combos.

🐻 Druid

Str/Int hybrid · Shapeshifting & nature

Ascendancies: Ritualist, Spirit Walker (NEW in 0.5!)

Best for: Bear form tanking and nature magic. Spirit Walker channels ancient Azmerian spirits (Stag stampede, etc.) for devastating attacks.

💡 New in 0.5: You can now change your Ascendancy class! If you pick the wrong one, you’re no longer stuck. Visit the Ascendancy shrine to respec.

🔧 2. Best Beginner Builds (Patch 0.5)

These builds are proven league starters — they work with zero investment and scale into endgame with minimal currency.

🏆 #1 — Minion Army Witch (Infernalist)

The ultimate “first character” build. Summon an army of skeletons, zombies, and spectres. You focus on dodging and positioning while your minions handle the damage.

  • Pros: Extremely safe, low gear dependency, great for learning bosses
  • Cons: Slower clear speed than direct damage builds, minion AI can be clunky
  • Key gems: Raise Skeleton, Summon Zombie, Bone Offering, Flesh Offering
  • Stat priority: Minion damage → minion life → your own survivability (Energy Shield)

🥈 #2 — Explosive Crossbow Deadeye (Ranger)

High mobility, massive AoE clear. Fire grenade-tipped crossbow bolts that chain-explode packs of enemies. One of the strongest league starters in 0.5.

  • Pros: Incredibly fast clear, great scaling, satisfying gameplay loop
  • Cons: Can be squishy if you don’t invest in evasion; boss DPS requires setup
  • Key gems: Explosive Shot, Grenade Rain, Evasion/dodge passives
  • Stat priority: Flat physical damage → projectile damage → attack speed → evasion

🥉 #3 — Bear Druid (Ritualist)

The tankiest build in the game. Transform into a bear and maul everything in melee range. Ideal if you hate dying and want to face-tank every boss.

  • Pros: Extremely tanky, simple rotation, forgiving for new players
  • Cons: Slower map clear, melee range means you need to learn boss patterns
  • Key gems: Bear Form, Maul, Roar, Nature’s Resilience
  • Stat priority: Life → armour → physical damage → attack speed

⭐ Honourable Mention — Gemling Legionnaire (Mercenary)

The breakout class of 0.5. Concentrated stat nodes in the passive tree make this an incredibly efficient build. Uses firearms and tactical abilities.

  • Why it’s hot: 0.5 patch buffed its passive tree nodes significantly
  • Best for: Players who want a gun-and-gadget playstyle that’s different from traditional ARPGs

🗺️ 3. Campaign Walkthrough Tips

The PoE2 campaign spans three acts with multiple zones. Unlike traditional ARPGs, PoE2’s campaign is genuinely challenging — bosses have complex mechanics and regular monsters can kill you.

General Campaign Tips:

  • Don’t skip side zones. You need the experience. Being underleveled makes bosses significantly harder.
  • Keep your flask charges up. Flasks are your primary healing — learn to manage charges proactively, not reactively.
  • Read boss telegraphs. Every boss attack is telegraphed with a visual cue. Dodge first, DPS second.
  • Use the sprint mechanic. Hold shift to sprint. This is essential for dodging and repositioning. Buy movement speed boots as soon as they appear at vendors.
  • Upgrade your weapon every 5–10 levels. Your weapon’s base damage is the single biggest factor in your DPS. Everything else is secondary during the campaign.

Act-by-Act Quick Notes:

Act 1 — The Hunting Grounds

Focus on finding your core skill gem early. Complete the side quests for passive skill points — these are permanent and vital. The Hunting Grounds is an open zone with extremely dangerous monsters; take extra care and don’t rush through.

Act 2 — The Desert & Blackguard

Difficulty ramps up. Ensure your resistances (fire, cold, lightning) are at least 40–50% by now. You’ll encounter your first real skill check bosses — practice dodging and learn the roll mechanic.

Act 3 — Endgame Transition

Cap your elemental resistances at 75% before entering Act 3. This is non-negotiable. Gear with life + resistances is more important than damage stats at this point. Complete your Ascendancy trial before the final boss.

📈 4. Leveling Strategy & Gear Priority

The Leveling Formula:

Your ideal level for any zone = Zone Level ÷ 16 + 3. Stay within this range for optimal XP. Too far above and you get diminished returns; too far below and you’ll struggle.

Gear Priority While Leveling:

  1. Weapon with highest base damage — This is king. Replace your weapon frequently.
  2. Life on every armour piece — You can’t do damage if you’re dead.
  3. Elemental resistances — Aim for 75% cap by Act 3. Check vendor items every town visit.
  4. Movement speed on boots — Faster movement = faster leveling = less time in danger zones.
  5. Links/sockets for your skill gems — More support gems = more damage. Prioritise socketed items that fit your build.

⚠️ Common trap: Don’t waste crafting currency while leveling. Orbs are worth significantly more at endgame. Vendor recipes and found gear are enough for the campaign.

⚡ 5. Ascendancy System Explained

Ascendancies are powerful specialisations that define your build’s identity. Each base class has two options, and as of 0.5 you can switch between them.

How to Unlock:

  1. Progress through the campaign until you reach the Ascendancy Trial
  2. Complete the trial (a challenging gauntlet/boss fight)
  3. Choose your Ascendancy at the shrine
  4. Earn Ascendancy points by completing additional trials

New in 0.5: Ascendancy respec is now possible! If you want to switch from Stormweaver to Chronomancer (or any other swap within your class), you can do so at the Ascendancy shrine. No rerolling required.

New 0.5 Ascendancies:

  • Spirit Walker (Huntress/Druid) — Channel ancient Azmerian spirits. The Stag grants massive stampede damage, while other spirits offer elemental and nature-based abilities.
  • Martial Artist (Monk) — Master battlefield control with combo chains. Three distinct fighting stances create devastating flow states.

🏔️ 6. Endgame Progression — Waystones & the Atlas

After the campaign, PoE2 opens up into a massive endgame system. Here’s how to navigate it without getting lost.

Step 1 — Reach Ziggurat Refuge

After defeating the Act 3 final boss, you arrive at the endgame hub: Ziggurat Refuge. This is your new home base.

Step 2 — Talk to Doryani

Find the hooded NPC at the Ziggurat. Doryani sells you starting Waystones (maps) and refreshes his inventory every time you level up. Buy lower-tier maps to start building your pool.

Step 3 — Cleanse Corrupted Nexus Areas

Your first endgame goal is clearing Corrupted Nexus zones. Each one you cleanse unlocks more of the Atlas and grants access to new content.

Step 4 — Towers & Tablets

The Precursor Tower reveals nearby Fortress maps. Insert Precursor Tablets to modify maps — adding difficulty, rewards, and league mechanics. This is the endgame customisation layer.

Step 5 — Push Map Tiers

Maps go from Tier 1 (easy) to Tier 16 (extremely hard). Higher tiers drop better loot and currency. Sustain your map pool by:

  • Running maps at your highest comfortable tier
  • Using the Fortune mechanic to boost Waystone drops
  • Buying maps from Doryani after each level-up
  • Trading with other players for specific maps you need

🔥 0.5 endgame addition: The Runes of Aldur league adds new encounters scattered throughout maps. Complete Aldur encounters for exclusive league rewards and bonus currency.

💰 7. Currency & Crafting Essentials

PoE2 doesn’t have gold. Instead, currency items are both money AND crafting materials. Understanding what to save and what to spend is critical.

Currency Tier List for Beginners:

🟢 Use Freely: Orbs of Transmutation, Orbs of Augmentation, Armourer’s Scraps, Blacksmith’s Whetstones

These are common and useful for basic gear improvement during leveling.

🟡 Use Carefully: Orbs of Alchemy, Chaos Orbs, Regal Orbs

Save these for endgame crafting or trade. Chaos Orbs are the de facto “dollar” in player trading.

🔴 Hoard These: Exalted Orbs, Divine Orbs, Annulment Orbs

Extremely valuable. Never use casually. These are your endgame bankroll for trading and high-end crafting.

Beginner Crafting Tips:

  • Vendor recipes: Sell a full set of unidentified rare items (every slot) to a vendor for 2 Chaos Orbs. This is your primary early currency income.
  • Quality your flasks: Use Glassblower’s Baubles on your life and utility flasks — the quality bonus is significant.
  • Don’t craft randomly. Look up what mods you need for your build first. Random chaos spam is almost always a waste.
  • Bench crafting: Unlock crafting bench recipes by completing specific content. The bench lets you add a guaranteed mod to an item with an open affix slot.

❌ 8. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Ignoring Resistances

75% elemental resistance cap is non-negotiable by endgame. You WILL die constantly without it. Prioritise res on every gear piece.

Spreading Passive Points

Don’t try to “do everything.” Pick one damage type and invest heavily. A focused build with 80% of points in one system outperforms a 50/50 split every time.

Wasting Currency Early

Exalted and Divine Orbs are worth far more in trade than anything you could randomly roll on leveling gear. Save them.

Skipping Flask Management

Flasks are not just healing — utility flasks (quicksilver, basalt, jade) are build-defining. Keep them upgraded and rolling.

Not Using the Trade Site

The official trade site is your best friend. A 1-Chaos upgrade from trade is often better than 50 Chaos worth of crafting attempts.

Running Maps You Can’t Handle

Higher tier ≠ better if you die constantly. Run the highest tier you can clear deathless. Speed and survival beat raw tier every time.
