Counter-Strike has been running for over 25 years — and it’s still one of the most-played games on Steam. CS2, Valve’s Source 2-powered successor, continues to dominate the competitive FPS landscape. Here’s everything happening in the CS2 world right now.

🏆 1. IEM Cologne 2026 — The Major Is Here

The IEM Cologne 2026 Major is officially live — and Valve dropped a massive update alongside it. This is one of the biggest CS2 events of the year, and the in-game experience has been completely revamped.

What’s New for Viewers & Players:

  • Major Hub: A new in-game hub lets you browse tournament brackets, team profiles, and match schedules
  • Viewer Pass: Purchase the Viewer Pass to earn upgradable coins, team stickers, and exclusive drops
  • Dynamic Sticker Pricing: Major stickers now use dynamic pricing — capsules are gone, replaced by individual sticker purchases
  • Pick’Em Challenge: Predict match outcomes for diamond coin upgrades and bragging rights
  • Souvenir Packs: The old random souvenir drop system has been completely replaced (see Section 2)

The Cologne Major has always been one of CS’s most prestigious events. This year’s format changes are being called the biggest shakeup since the introduction of Majors in 2013.

✨ 2. The Souvenir Creation System — A Game Changer

This is the headline update of 2026. Valve has introduced DIY Souvenirs — and it’s completely reshaping the skin economy.

How Souvenir Creation Works:

  1. Take any Normal or existing Souvenir skin from your inventory
  2. Select a completed Major match from the tournament
  3. Choose a specific player from that match
  4. Scrape existing stickers (if any) and apply new ones
  5. Your weapon is permanently returned with gold Team, Autograph, and Map stickers

What This Means for Players

You can now create a personalised souvenir from your favourite skin + your favourite player. Want a “donk” gold-stickered AWP Dragon Lore? Now you can make it.

What This Means for the Market

Old souvenir packages and unboxable items like cases and music kits have been removed from the loot pool. Existing rare souvenirs may spike in value as collectibles.

🥇 3. Top 5 Teams & Players to Watch

#1 Team Vitality 🇫🇷

Holding the top spot in world rankings with fierce consistency. Their star AWPer continues to dominate, and the team’s tactical depth is unmatched. The most complete roster in CS2 right now.

#2 Natus Vincere (NaVi) 🇺🇦

The perennial contenders. NaVi’s structured, disciplined approach keeps them in the title conversation at every event. Their roster stability is a key advantage in a scene full of shuffles.

#3 Team Spirit 🇷🇺

Anchored by the phenomenal Danil “donk” Kryshkovets — widely considered the best entry fragger in the world. At just 18, donk plays with a fearlessness that makes him must-watch CS2. His rating consistently sits above 1.30 in big tournaments.

#4 Team Falcons 🇸🇦

The Saudi-backed superteam featuring Nikola “NiKo” Kovač — one of the greatest aimers in CS history. Falcons have become a legitimate top-4 force and a dark horse for any Major title.

#5 FURIA 🇧🇷

Brazil’s finest. Powered by KSCERATO’s incredible consistency and the most passionate fanbase in CS2. FURIA’s aggressive playstyle makes every match explosive.

👁️ Player to watch: “donk” from Team Spirit. At 18 years old, he’s the undisputed #1 player in the world right now. His entry fragging stats are historically unprecedented.

💎 4. Skin Market & Economy Shakeup

The Souvenir Creation update has sent ripples through the CS2 skin market.

📈 Going Up

  • Pre-update souvenir skins (now legacy collectibles)
  • Gold stickers from specific star players
  • High-tier skins people want to “souvenir-ify”
  • Viewer Pass related items

📉 Going Down

  • Old souvenir packages (no longer obtainable)
  • Discontinued cases and music kits
  • Capsule-based stickers (replaced by direct purchases)
  • Low-demand team stickers

💡 Investment tip: If you’re into CS2 skin trading, the meta has shifted. The souvenir system means high-float or battle-scarred skins with gold stickers could become a new niche. Old-system souvenirs are now finite — they’ll never be created again.

🛠️ 5. Workshop Mods & Community Content

Despite being primarily a competitive game, CS2’s Steam Workshop and community server scene is thriving.

🎯 Aim Training Maps

Still the most popular Workshop category. Maps like Aim Botz and Reflex/Flick Training remain essential daily warmup tools for ranked grinders and pros alike.

💨 Smoke/Flash Lineup Maps

Utility practice maps for every competitive map in the pool. Learn pixel-perfect smoke lineups, flash timings, and molotov spots. Essential for anyone pushing past Gold Nova.

🏟️ Surf & KZ (Kreedz) Servers

The movement skill community is as alive as ever. Surf maps (ride slopes with precision) and KZ maps (extreme parkour) are a completely different game within CS2. Thousands of custom servers run 24/7.

🔫 Custom Game Modes

Retake servers, execute practice, 1v1 arenas, and deathmatch FFA — the community server browser is packed. Valve’s official modes are good, but community servers are where veteran players spend most of their non-competitive time.

🔄 6. Tips for Returning Players

Coming back from CS:GO or haven’t played in a while? Here’s what changed:

  • Sub-tick system: CS2 uses sub-tick instead of 64/128 tick. Actions are registered between ticks — your inputs are more precise than ever before.
  • Smoke grenades are volumetric: You can shoot through smokes to create gaps. Bullets, HE grenades, and flashbangs interact with smoke dynamically. This changes everything about utility usage.
  • New buy menu: The radial buy menu is gone. It’s a grid layout now — rebind your buy keys if you had muscle-memory binds from CS:GO.
  • Premier mode & MR12: Competitive matches are now MR12 (first to 13, not 16). Premier mode uses ELO-based CS Rating visible to all players.
  • Movement feels different: Counter-strafing is more forgiving. If you relied on perfect counter-strafe timing in CS:GO, you’ll find the timing window is slightly wider.
  • Your skins transferred: All CS:GO skins carry over to CS2. Nothing was lost.
